Tip #4 A Photo is Worth More Than 1,000 Words – 20 Tips for 2020

There is a famous saying that a picture is worth 1,000 words.  The fact is, a great photo or image is worth so much more. Our fourth tip in the 20 Tips for 2020 is the importance of a good picture with electronic and print publications.

Tip #4 – Photos are Critical

As a writer, I love words.  I love how they can paint a picture, share critical thoughts and provide a solid emotional connection.  As much as I love words, I know that a great photo or graphic draws a reader’s attention, provides a clearer understanding of the situation, and provides a visual connection that words simply can’t.  So what makes a good image?

Action – Images that convey movement, excitement, laughter or joy are powerful.  The motion demonstrated in the image draws the reader in and conveys a particular emotion that helps the reader genuinely feel what you are trying to tell. So whenever possible, use an image or graph that shows motion instead of a standard headshot.

Design – A good design is essential to any electronic or print publication. However, not all of us are graphic designers.  So finding tools that can create a better image or design element are helpful. Some good options that are available for free or little cost include Adobe Spark or Canva. These tools can resize images, adjust colors and provide free images that can be used for social media, print and website options.

Color – Words are usually in black and white.  Images or graphics provide an opportunity to give a splash of color to the project.  The color brings attention to the project in a way that words simply can’t.

Emotion – At the end of the day, images and graphics add emotion to any piece.  The words are important, but the picture is what brings the words to life. It shares the fun, seriousness and joy of any situation.  What is the emotion you want to convey and make sure that your image promotes those emotions.
